Professor Peter Mitchell established the NeuroIntervention Service at the Royal Melbourne Hospital, where he is the director of the Victorian Endovascular Clot Retrieval statewide service, and the Royal Children’s Hospital. He introduced new endovascular techniques to the RMH, including intracranial aneurysm embolisation, Onyx embolization for vascular malformations, intra-arterial treatments for acute stroke. He has been investigator trials including NHMRC funded (vertebroplasty & Stentrode) and international trials (international Carotid Stent Study & Matrix and Platinum Science aneurysm coiling).
Acute intra-arterial stroke treatment trials as investigator include IMS3, DAWN, and principal investigator on Intra-arterial Plasmin, EXTEND-IA, and EXTEND IA TNK, and DIRECT-SAFE. His most recent research collaborations have resulted in publications in the New England Journal of Medicine and Lancet Neurology, and he is a member of the HERMES collaborative.
